Sensitive Skin Care Info

Sensitive skin care is a problem for many people. Sensitive skin is easily irritated by many different things that can cause redness, inflammation and even scaly areas that itch and other problems.

Thin skin is the biggest cause of sensitive skin. Skin is thicker on some parts and thinner on other parts and skin tends to get thinner as we age. The reason that thin skin is more sensitive is that the lower levels of skin have less protection from the sun, wind, temperature and chemicals.

One of the major problems that requires skin care for sensitive areas is dryness. If you have dry skin you need to avoid any products that are alkaline. Don't use regular soap if you have dry skin. Use a cleaner, a toner and a moisturizer that formulated especially for Sensitive dry skin. The reason for this is when your skin is dry it can get small cracks, so small you may not be able to see them, and these little cracks are what will cause the inflammation and make your skin look red.

Identifying Sensitive Skin

How do you know if you need sensitive skin care? If the weather affects your skin you probably have the problem. If you shave and get breakouts you probably have sensitive skin. If you have complexion problems for no reason you need to look at the possibility you may have skin that needs milder treatment. If soaps and detergents leave your face red or irritated you need to find some milder products to use on your face. You also need to be careful with cosmetics as they also can have harsh chemicals.

Another way to identify sensitive skin is whether you sunburn very easily. Getting sunburned when you only spend a brief time is the sun is a reliable indicator that your skin is very sensitive. If that's the case with you then you really need to find a good sunscreen, that doesn't irritate your skin, and wear it everytime you leave your house. Not only that but the heat of the sun can damage your skin all by itself as it can lead to more of the tiny cracks you don't want.

Help for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin care has many different requirements than does normal skin. If you have the problem you need to use a softer brush, stay away from products with strong scents and in particular stay away from harsh exfoliants. Always stay away from products that contain alpha lipoic acid, alcohol, sodium, benzoyl peroxide or apricot kernels or pits. They will dry out your complexion and leave it looking red and cracked. Also try to keep from using products with dyes or colorings as these can also irritate your skin.

Don't put on too much moisturizer. To keep skin healthy you need to moisturize as part of your sensitive skin care regimen but do it with a mild moisturizing cream and apply it on your skin lightly as needed. Too can clog your pores so apply just enough to keep your skin well hydrated. These are the "don'ts" for sensitive skin care.

What you need to do for your sensitive skin care plan is to learn to read lables and not use any products with any of the above ingredients. Check out the hypo allergenic products as they are generally good for people who have problem skin. Once again, be sure to read the labels.

You can find toners, cleansers and lotion with ingredients that will not irritate the skin. Ingredients like white tea, lavender, sandalwood, chamomile, and rose. There are a lot of great all natural products out there that won't cause you problems. However once again you have to red the lables because there are organic things that can irritate. Apricot kernels or pits are totally natural but will irritate you if you use them.

If you are using sensitive skin care products the one thing you never want to do is microdermabrasion. It's a very aggressive way of treating skin problems but with sensitive skin it's possible that the process can destroy the skins protective layer and cause a great deal of inflammation. If you really need an exfoliant try mixing up some olive oil and brown sugar into a paste and using that.

If you go to a spa make sure you tell them that you have very sensitive skin and that they need to use the mildest products that will work for you. If you don't let them know about your problem you really can't blame them for bad results.

If you need sensitive skin care check every product you want to use on a small area first. If it causes a reaction on a small area don't use it.

Last but not least are a couple of simple tips that can help. Try keeping your skin care products in the refrigerator. Applying the cold creams or lotions to your skin can help constrict the blood vessels which will reduce swelling. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit and vegetables as diet is also a part of sensitive skin care.
