Hair Plugs Today

Hair plugs got such a bad connotation they aren’t called hair plugs anymore. That's probably not a bad thing as people have the impression now, when you say hair plugs, of splotchy looking clumps of hair that don't look natural. It really wasn't that bad but advertisements made hair plugs look really bad.

Now they are no longer called hair plugs but are now a follicular hair transplant. It was discovered that hairs from the back back of the head didn’t have the same problems with falling out as did hairs from the top of the head so that was an improvement on the old process.

Hair Plugs Progress

There's been tons of progress made with hair transplantation since hair plugs were first possible. Micro tools have made the results look a lot more natural than they did a few years ago. These micro implements allow smaller plugs to be harvested with only a few hairs which look more natural, usually 1 – 4 hair strands per grouping.

Advanced techniques transplant these naturally occurring 1 to 4 hair plug groups. This technique makes for a much more a natural appearance. This new procedure is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

In one method a strip of scalp is removed under local anesthesia and this piece of scalp tissue is then cut in to small pieces of tissue called grafts which are transplanted back in to the thinning area of the head. This will leave a small linear scar in the donor area, which should be covered by a patients hair when it grows longer.

The next method is FUE Harvesting(Follicular Unit Extraction). Individual follicles are removed under local anesthesia and uses tiny punches of between 0.6mm and 1.25mm in diameter. Each follicle is then reinserted back in to the scalp in the thinning area. Because this is single follicles and little tissue is removed there aren't visible scars. Recovery from FUE is within 7 days.

The follicular unit hair transplant procedure has continued to evolve and has become more refined and much less invasive as the size of the incisions has become much smaller. These smaller and less invasive methods let surgeons place a larger number of follicular grafts in a given area for a much better looking head of hair.

Hair Plugs Summary

Hair transplant surgery is the most expensive of all of the of hair loss solutions and probably isn't covered by your insurance. You should check with your insurance carrier to see if hair plugs are covered. Considering the long term expense of using topical hair therapy that can never be stopped without the prospect of going bald, the cost of hair plugs and transplant surgery is not as bad a deal as it might look like.
Adding up the costs of maintaining your hair for the rest of your life using current meds may actually make the hair transplant cheaper in the long run.

So check out the new process for getting your hair to grow again. Hair plugs are still around and they now work and look better than they ever did. Sometimes a name change is the correct thing to do and in the case of hair plugs it was a good thing. There are few negative connotations to getting hair replacement surgery now days as it's simpler, easier and much better looking than it used to be. If you have the money hair plugs are a good looking long term solution.
